Clang, bang, clunk. If the sound of your pipes are driving you up the wall, it’s time to do something about it. Here’s what you need to know about why your plumbing is being so noisy, and what you can do about it before you call a plumber in Sydney’s inner west.

3 Reasons Your House Plumbing Makes Noises
Shaking or Rattling
While most pipes are behind the walls, ceiling and under the floors, some pipes need to be hung in the air and fastened securely. If one of these fasteners falls off, slips or gets loose, the water moving through that pipe will cause it to rattle. As the pipe shakes, it hits the wall or the fastener joint and the higher the water pressure, the louder it sounds.
How to Fix It
If you want to stop the rattle, you first have to determine where it’s coming from. It could be as simple as looking inside a cupboard under the sink or checking under the house with a torch. You’ll want someone to be turning the taps on or flushing the toilet while you’re there for a more accurate result. Once you’ve found the problem, tighten up the screws or find another way to secure the pipe (gaffe tape might be enough).
If the pipe is behind a wall, don’t start smashing holes in the plasterboard. Instead, call a plumber. You should also call a plumber if you can’t find the problem.
Gurgling
If your pipes are making a glug-glug-glug sound, it means they are having trouble draining the water. It’s usually the result of something blocking the pipes, whether that’s a toy, sanitary products, too much toilet paper, hair build-up or something else.
How to Fix It
If you want to try to fix this yourself, you can use a plunger to attempt to plunge whatever it is out again through the drain or toilet. If that doesn’t work, call in a professional plumber to quickly clear your pipes of any build-up or debris, which will stop the noise.
Squealing
Every house has a complete system of pipes and valves that in turn have a lot of small pieces enabling them to work efficiently. When a washer or other small part wears out, that part of the plumbing may squeak or whistle when it is used. Most of the time, this whistling sound comes from a worn-out piece of hardware near a dishwasher, washing machine, or dryer. Alternatively, it could be that the main shut-off valve is the problem.
How to Fix It
If you only hear the squealing sound when you use the washer, the problem is easy to fix. Just turn the valve off and check the washers inside the house and replace any washers that are broken or have worn out. If the problem is the main shut-off valve, turn it off at the water mains and replace or fix the valve.
It’s probably best you get a professional plumber in to fix any problems with the water mains, or if the washer replacement doesn’t make a difference.
